Lionel Messi reportedly reached out to Julian Alvarez via phone to congratulate his fellow Argentine star on his move to Atletico Madrid. Alvarez, the young Argentine striker, joined the La Liga giants from Manchester City in a deal reportedly worth €75 million.
According to Argentine outlet Diario Ole, Messi called Alvarez to tell him that the transfer would take his career to the next level. The 24-year-old had been making a strong impression at City, playing various positions under Pep Guardiola.
Alvarez sought to leave the Etihad for a new challenge, which Atletico Madrid provided. He joins a Diego Simeone-managed side that finished fourth in La Liga last season and will be expected to lead the attack following Alvaro Morata’s departure.
Lionel Messi, having faced Atletico Madrid 43 times throughout his career, understands what Los Colchoneros can offer Alvarez. His close friend Luis Suarez also spent several years at the Wanda Metropolitano after leaving Barcelona.
Alvarez arrives with his reputation at an all-time high following another impressive major tournament appearance with Argentina. He played a key role in helping La Abiceleste win the Copa America, scoring two goals in five games. This came after a season where he netted 19 goals and provided 13 assists in 54 matches across all competitions at the club level.
Julian Alvarez reflected on playing alongside the “one of a kind” Lionel Messi, highlighting their shared experiences. Alvarez made a significant impact at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, with four goals and one assist in seven games, contributing to Argentina’s victory.
Despite Alvarez’s impressive performances, Lionel Messi was undeniably the standout player in the Middle East, finally securing a World Cup trophy. The legendary forward scored seven goals and provided three assists in seven games, including a crucial brace in the final.
In an interview with Manchester City’s media team last season, Alvarez praised Argentina’s captain, saying: “He is one of a kind. Obviously, having him in the team is a privilege, and I’ll help him and the whole team bring joy to Argentina… Being there, you realize that he is a really normal person, he is a great person and a great captain.”
Messi has seemingly taken Alvarez under his wing during international duties, with the pair connecting superbly at both the World Cup and Copa America. Now, Messi is playing his club football in MLS with Inter Miami after a successful career in Europe.
